Does your project deserve a ‘Kickstart’?
By Michelle Brohier
Humanity has always had many great ideas that have and continue to change and revolutionise the way we live and think.
But many a brilliant idea may not have seen the light of day if the inventors gave in to the lack of funds.
This is where Kickstarter comes in, where people with ideas seek ways to financially support their projects through crowdfunding.
It’s the novel new way to gain funding by letting the people decide!
No more relying on a group of 3 executives who may be out of touch with the needs of the masses;
Kickstarter let’s innovators reach out to the very people they should be – potential consumers.
We did a scouring of the ‘competition’ and have listed some of the most popular projects on the site (that is, they’ve received full funding) just so you have an idea of the kind of projects that could gain you the monetary push you need from the WWW.
The full-fund ‘winners’

Silic: A shirt that cleans itself
Laundry. Who likes it?
Silic shirts are self-cleaning clothing with a hydrophobic technology that not only keeps the shirt stain free, but dry as well.
The existence of these shirts went viral, and while the technology for the shirt has already been created and tested, they still needed funding to produce the shirts.
They received a whopping 4,039 backers with people pledging US$298,251 to the project.
It is apparent now how many people don’t want to wash their clothes.
If you don’t either, the Silic shirts are now available online for US$48.
Pressy – the Almighty Android Button

First they made touchscreen phones to do away with the need for pesky buttons.
Now they’re putting one back!
Pressy allows you to perform your selected and common actions with a simple, intuitive physical button.
Instead of having to unlock your screen and find the app to turn your flashlight on, or to start up your gaming app, all you have to do is install Pressy by plugging it into the headphone jack, download the free app and set it up.
Button-loving Kickstarter users gave Pressy 28,818 backers with a total pledge of US$695,138.
Pressy is now available online with the cost of US$27.
The Porta-Pi. A DIY Mini Arcade Cabinet for Raspberry Pi
There are a number of us who have a special place for those classic 8-bit arcade games that have shaped the way we loved gaming for many years.
And for those who remember these arcade games, it was a dream to be able to play them right within the comfort of your home.
But not only were they big and bulky, portable game consoles soon became a thing.
With the Porta-Pi, you get a customisable, laser-cut, retro, chunky, DIY miniature video arcade for the Raspberry Pi, which you will need to get yourself.
But you will get a laser cut cabinet, ready for assembly, the 7″ LCD screen, commercial arcade joystick and, arcade buttons and micro switches and more.
While this was highlighted to be one of the coolest Kickstarter projects, the funding was not as successful as hoped with only 130 backers with US$21,815 pledged when their goal was US$36,000.
It takes a lot of effort to bring an idea to life, but along the way some money is definitely needed.
While not all projects can be successfully funded, you never know when that one off-beat idea scores you paydirt.
Think you have a fantastic idea and just need a little money ‘push’; add it on to Kickstarter.
You could be on the way to revolutionising your world.
